the stories

A story is a story is a

Most of the submissions we received for this first issue were “short
stories,” i.e. fiction.  Of course, our mission statement and
submission guidelines outline many alternative storytelling
options: grocery store receipts, overheard conversations,
songs in the shower.  A friend of mine told me, “I’m glad
you asked me to submit, because otherwise I would have
thought you only wanted fiction.”  This, because I suggested
she submit a poem.

I started feeling worried.

Then, a lightning flash of excitement:
This journal is not just a hip idea; it serves
a purpose.  When I say “stories” people
think fiction, not due to a lack of thorough
explanation, but because we’re trained to think this
way.  It’s like a Rorshach test of the landscape of literature.

When I say “personal,” you say, “essay,” when I say “short,” you say, “story,” when I say “go,” you say “tigers!”
Go! Tigers! Go! Tigers!

This journal is an opportunity to play with our literary assumptions, broaden the horizon of what we think
makes a story a story, and, in a way, change nothing about literature at all except to accept stories for what they
already are: a brief and captivating description of an event that one person tells another.

In this issue, we’ve got: a poem, a found note, a meatball recipe, an audio documentary, a short
movie, and a hotdog taste test.  And of course, we’ve got a few short stories.

When I say Storyscape, you say…
