The Bear in the Neighbor’s Kitchen (and other stories) She Had A Boyfriend James Iredell but I drove her home. Still, I stopped at the man’s house for weed first. Dust grew like hair on the drawn drapes and the living room was dark as a movie theater. Only the snake’s terrarium on the otherwise empty bookshelf glowed with fluorescence like an exit sign. She wanted to hold the snake. I think her name was Dana. She loved them, she said—snakes, that is. Though this python thing bit her—leaving a crescent of rapidly darkening maroon over the meaty part of her palm—afterwards we still puttered over Donner Pass. The boulders and pines flew by like molars and canines. We sang Aretha Franklin: “What you want, baby I got it.” She had a boyfriend, I know. They always do. |
