| Histories by Anna Catone |
I didn’t know how many times
the van turned over,
but I always thought it was three
before I went through the window
into snow, lost consciousness.
Why tell ourselves this old story now,
sitting in the doctor’s office,
the brain lit up—scars, memory,
diagnosis hanging on the wall?
And then it’s not the story
of a near-fatal accident anymore….
You don’t even know what you’re capable of,
my mother said that night through a telephone wire,
turning to face the garden window squarely,
with decision.
